Transition Drills
5 on 3.5 Transition break:
The 5 offensive players start evenly spaced below the baseline, with 5 defenders opposite of them free throw line extended. The coach has a ball and stands on either elbow.
The drill starts with the coach throwing the ball to any offensive player along the baseline and calling out another defensive player’s name.
The defender facing the offensive player who catches the pass from the coach and the defender who's name is called will sprint to touch the baseline, while the offense goes on the break.
The two defenders touch the baseline and sprint back to get back on defense and in the play.
The offense tries to keep the advantage and score in transition.
5 on 3 Continuous:
This drill consists of 3 teams of 5 or more players. One team starts by circling in the lane (black), and one team starts 3 players in the half court circle and the remaining two players below the opposite baseline (red). The last team is positioned below the baseline where the first team is circling (blue).
The coach starts with a ball and will make a lay up to initiate the transition break from the circling players.
As this is happening, the 3 defenders who started in the half court circle sprint back to defend the attacking team.
The black team attempts to keep the advantage and score in transition. As this is happening, the team that was initially off (blue) will have 3 players start in the half court circle.
On the made basket or defensive rebound, the two remaining red players join their team and go on the break, now attacking the three blue defenders who have sprinted back.
This drill can be run continuously until the time limit is met or a team reaches a certain amount of points. The rotation is defense to offense to off.
2-Man Transition Series:
This drill starts with two lines; one line has a ball beneath the rim and the other line starts on the high wing without a ball.
The player on the wing (2) will call for the outlet and 1 will outlet the ball to 2. 2 will dribble push to the middle of the floor and jump stop at the top of the key.
The player who made the outlet pass (1) sprints to the sideline and around 2 as he pushes to the middle of the floor. 1 will then cut to the hoop to receive the pass from 2 and finish at the rim.
2 will then get the rebound as 1 sprints out to the high wing to call for and receive the outlet.
1 will now dribble push to the middle of the floor and jump stop at the top of the key.
The player who made the outlet pass (2) sprints to the sideline and around 1 as he pushes to the middle of the floor. 2 will then cut to the hoop to receive the pass from 1 and finish at the rim.
The next two players can go once the first group has made their first lay up.
3-Man Transition Series:
The drill starts with 3 players spaced on the baseline and the player in the center (1) starts with the ball.
1 will pass to a side (2) and all three players will begin sprinting the length of the floor. 2 passes back to 1, who swings the ball to 3.
3 passes back to 1 in the center who takes a dribble if needed and jump stops at the top of the key.
The player who received the initial pass from the center (2) will then cut hard to the basket and receive the pass from 1 to finish at the rim.
You can do both sides, mix in different finishes, sequences and shots.
