PNR Offense Drills

PNR Shooting Series:

  • 1 starts with the ball in the slot, with 2 (the shooter) in the strong side corner.

  • 1 starts with a dribble combo before attacking middle off the ball screen (cones).

  • 2 shakes or lifts on 1’s drive and 1 throws a hook pass to 2 as he lifts for a shot.

  • You can add coaches or dummy defenders to make the action more game-like.

  • The next shot in the progression is 2 in the weak side corner receiving the kick out on 1’s middle penetration.

  • The final shot in the progression is 2 in the weak side slot receiving the early kick from 1 for a shot.

PNR passing Series:

  • The screeners (4 & 5) each have their own ball and start on the block. The ball handlers start without a ball in the weak side slot. You can add a coach or dummy defender in the middle of the lane.

  • 5 passes to 1 and sprints to set an inside slot ball screen for 1 to attack middle—the first pass in the progression is a pocket pass in front of the defender with 5 finishing at the rim.

  • The 2nd pass in the progression is a lob pass over the top of the defender with 5 finishing at the rim.

  • The final pass in the progression is after 5’s initial roll, he will post up the defender and 1 enters the ball to 5, who makes a post move to score.

Cowboy Competetive:

  • Split into two teams—one team will be on offense first for a set number of reps or time with one team playing defense, before switching.

  • The offensive guards/wings will start on the wing (where 1 is) with the line of extra players behind. The offensive bigs/screeners will start in the slot (where 5 is) with the line of extra players behind.

  • The defensive guards/wings start on the opposite wing (where X1) is with the line of extra players behind. The defensive bigs will start in the opposite corner (where X5) is with the ball and extra players lined up behind.

  • X5 swings the ball to X1 who swings the ball to the coach at the top of the key.

  • After throwing their passes, X5 will begin to closeout to 5 and X1 will begin to closeout to 1.

  • After receiving the pass from X1, the coach swings the ball to 5 who swings the ball to 1 and follows his pass into a ball screen.

  • The action is now live—offense goods a point for scoring and defense gets a stop for a stop & rebound.

Pick & Roll Screener Finishing Progression:

  • 5 starts on the block with a cone (defender to be screened) placed in the opposite slot. The coach starts on the strong side block with the ball. You can also add a dummy defender to contest the finishes from the screener as he rolls to the rim.

  • The first finish will be 5 receiving a pocket pass or lob from the coach at the elbow before finishing.

  • For the next finish the coach starts on the opposite wing of 5 with the ball—5 will roll, turn and seal and look to receive the post entry from the coach before making a move to score.

  • For the final finish the coach starts in the strong side slot with the ball—5 will roll and then duck in to receive the post entry from the coach before making a move to score.

PNR/DHO Decision Making:

  • The offensive player (1) starts with the ball on the wing being guarded by the defender (X1). There is also a player or coach positioned in the center of the free throw line.

  • 1 passes the ball to 3 and sprints to receive the handoff, with their first option being to get downhill.

  • If 1 cannot get downhill from the hand off, 3 can turn and set a ball screen for 1 to attack. After the hand off and ball screen, 1 can no longer use 3 for help.

  • You can prescribe defensive coverages depending on what you are wanting to work on (i.e. X1 go under the hand off, but over the ball screen, etc.)
