PNR DEfense Drills
3 on 3 PNR Shell:
Start with the ball handler (1) at the top of the key with 2 on the wing and 5 at the block (each player is guarded by a defender).
5 will sprint to set an outside middle ball screen for 1 (this will be the 1st screen) and roll to the rim. 1 will attack off of the ball screen and 2 will rotate to the slot.
The defenders must execute their ball screen coverage and X2 must tag the screener as he rolls to the rim. Once that has happened, 1 kicks the ball back to 2.
5 will then sprint to set an outside slot ball screen for 2 (this will be the 2nd screen) and roll to the rim. 2 will attack off of the ball screen and 1 will rotate to the wing.
The defenders must execute their ball screen coverage and X1 must tag the screener as he rolls to the rim. Once that has happened, 2 kicks the ball back to 1.
5 will then sprint to set a wing ball screen for 1 (this will be the 3rd and final screen before it’s live) and roll to the rim. Once this ball screen is set, the action goes to live 3 on 3.
Rapid Fire Over/Under:
The drill starts with a ball handler in the corner (1) and an on-ball defender (X1)—the line starts in this corner. There are also 3 screeners (2-4) around the perimeter with defenders guarding them.
1 dribbles at and uses the first ball screen from 2. X1 guards the ball and goes under/over the screen at the last second—in this example, the on-ball defenders are working on going under.
The screener’s defender (X2) calls out “screen left” to work on in-game communication and gives space for X1 to slide under the screen.
After using the first ball screen, 1 continues on to use the ball screens from 3 & 4 with the X1 working on going under each of them.
After 1 & X1 make it all the way through, 1 skips the ball to the next offensive player in line.
The screeners + defenders all move one rotation closest to the ball, and 1/X1 become the final screeners for the next rotation.
Cowboy Competetive:
Split into two teams—one team will be on offense first for a set number of reps or time with one team playing defense, before switching.
The offensive guards/wings will start on the wing (where 1 is) with the line of extra players behind. The offensive bigs/screeners will start in the slot (where 5 is) with the line of extra players behind.
The defensive guards/wings start on the opposite wing (where X1) is with the line of extra players behind. The defensive bigs will start in the opposite corner (where X5) is with the ball and extra players lined up behind.
X5 swings the ball to X1 who swings the ball to the coach at the top of the key.
After throwing their passes, X5 will begin to closeout to 5 and X1 will begin to closeout to 1.
After receiving the pass from X1, the coach swings the ball to 5 who swings the ball to 1 and follows his pass into a ball screen.
The action is now live—offense goods a point for scoring and defense gets a stop for a stop & rebound.
2 on 2 Tag Roller:
2 starts with the ball in the corner with X2 guarding him. 1 is in the slot with X1 guarding him but in help position to start. The coach or screener will start in the middle of the lane.
2 passes to 1 and the defenders jump to the ball.
The coach or screener goes to set an inside ball screen for 1.
1 uses the ball screen and X1 fights through the screen (can go over or under depending on how you defend ball screens).
The coach or screener rolls to the rim after setting the ball screen and X2 must tag or help-in on the roller.
2 lifts from the corner to the wing to receive the pass from 1.
X2 closes out to 2 and it is live 1 on 1 from the wing on the catch.
PNR On-Ball Gauntlet:
The ball handler (1) starts in the slot and is guarded by X1. The coach (screener) starts in the middle of the lane.
The coach or screener will sprint to set an inside slot ball screen for 1. X1 is going to fight over this first ball screen.
1 uses the ball screen and bounces his dribble to the other slot, all while being guarded by X1.
Once in the opposite slot, the coach or screener sprints to set another inside slot ball screen for 1, but X1 is going to go under the screen this time.
1 uses the ball screen and bounces his dribble to the middle of the floor.
The coach will then sprint to set a flat ball screen for 1 and the action is now live. 1 is attempting to get downhill and finish while X1 is fighting through the flat ball screen and trying to recover/contest.
3 on 3 Continuous PNR Defense:
The drill starts with 3 offensive players around the perimeter being guarded by 3 defenders.
2 passes to 1 at the top of the key and follows his pass into a ball screen for 1 to dribble to the wing. X2 & X1 execute the proper ball screen coverage, while X3 tags 2 as he rolls to the rim.
After rolling to the rim, 2 exits to the weak side wing and the drill is back at the starting point.
1 passes to 3 at the top of the key and follows his pass into a ball screen for 3 to dribble to the wing. X1 & X3 execute the proper ball screen coverage, while X2 tags 1 as he rolls to the rim.
After rolling to the rim, 1 exits to the weak side wing and the drill is back at the starting point.
3 passes to 2 at the top of the key and follows his pass into a ball screen for 2 to dribble to the wing. X3 & X2 execute the proper ball screen coverage, while X1 tags 3 as he rolls to the rim.
After rolling to the rim, 3 exits to the weak side wing and the drill is back at the starting point.
After the third rotation, a coach will yell “live” to initiate live 3 on 3.
